Dr. Lauren Nephew is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and is the Associate Vice Chair of Health Equity for the Department of Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine. Her NIH-funded research program uses patient-centered approaches to investigate how structural and social determinants of health contribute to disparities in liver disease, focusing on developing interventions to improve access to care.
Dr. Nephew is a national leader in liver health equity, serving from 2021-2024 as the Chair of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) Inclusion and Diversity Committee, where she has contributed to lasting organizational change. She also serves on the Lancet Commission to reduce the burden of liver disease in the United States.
Dr. Nephew completed her Internal Medicine residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, followed by fellowships in Gastroenterology and Liver Transplantation at the University of Pennsylvania. She earned her medical degree from the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University, where she also completed a Master’s in Bioethics. At the University of Pennsylvania, she furthered her expertise with a Master’s of Science in Clinical Epidemiology.
She is a champion of social justice, a dedicated wife, and a mother of two.
